Before hitting the red carpet for a life of fame and fortune, many of the A-list celebrities we know and love were just regular college students taking part in their school’s student life. A lot of these celebs actually pledge fraternities and sororities, and still consider themselves as part of these Greek organizations today. Who knows, you might have a famous “sister” or “brother” you didn’t even know about.
Matthew McConaughey – Delta Tau Delta
Super chill, very handsome, all-around cool dude Matthew McConaughey attend the University of Texas for school, where he became a proud brother of Delta Tau Delta in 1989. Even before the fame, we know he was killing it with the ladies. Alright, alright, alright.
Jenna Dewan – Pi Beta Phi
After a successful high school career as a cheerleader and a prom queen, Jenna Dewan went on to attend the University of Southern California where she joined Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She was already pursuing her dreams of becoming a back-up dancer while in school, and so she did not end up graduating. But she definitely had fun while it lasted.
Megan Markle – Kappa Kappa Gamma
Before she was royalty…well, ex-royalty now, and even before she was an actress, Megan Markle was a student at Northwestern University. While she was enrolled there, she pledged the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and was apparently beloved by all of her sisters (we’re not surprised, honestly).
Will Ferrel – Tau Delta Tau
Knowing Will Ferrel from his hilarious work on television and in movies, it’s actually pretty easy to picture him as a frat brother. Ferrel attended the University of Southern California in 1990, and pledged the Tau Delta Tau Fraternity. His picture looks serious, but we’re sure he was the class clown, even then.
Jennifer Garner – Pi Beta Phi
Jennifer Garner was studying Chemistry at Denison University when she decided she absolutely hated it and switched to Drama so she could pursue her passion. At the same time, she also pledged Pi Beta Phi sorority. She later expressed regrets about missing chapter meetings, as she did not have enough time to fully dedicate to the sisterhood with school and a side job.
Carrie Underwood – Tri Sigma
Blonde and beautiful country singer, Carrie Underwood, was just a regular hometown girl who went to study at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. While she was there, she joined Sigma Sigma Sigma (Tri Sigma) Sorority and made tight bonds with the sisters there who she is still very close with today.
Ty Burrell – Sigma Ki
You might know him as TV’s favorite father, but did you know that he’s also a brother? More specifically, he’s a brother of the Sigma Ki Fraternity at the University of Oregon.
Harrison Ford – Sigma Nu
Before he was flying through space on the Millenium Flacon with Chubbacca, or even riding through the jungle trying to find the Ark of the Covenant, Harrison ford was a student enrolled at Ripon College where he pledged as a brother of Sigma Nu back in the early 60’s.
Julia Louis-Dreyfuss – Delta Gamma
Julia Louis-Dreyfuss became a sister of the Delta Gamma sorority during her time at Northwestern. Although she enjoyed it, she deactivated after only one year of sisterhood and went on to pursue her career in acting.
John Goodman – Sigma Phi Epsilon
Everyone knows at least one epic John Goodman movie, but most people don’t realize that he was also a frat bro! Goodman earned a football scholarship to Missouri State University before he had any inkling of becoming an actor. He ended up pledging the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity while he was there, although it took him a few years to actually join.
Mariska Hargitay – Kappa Kappa Gamma
The Special Victims Unit isn’t the only elite squad Mariska Hargitay was a part of. She was also a sister of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at UCLA. She ended up leaving school early to pursue her acting career, but she’s still a proud sister!
Wanda Sykes – Delta Sigma Theta
Comedian and TV show host Wanda Sykes pledged as a sister of Delta Sigma Theta while she was in school at Hampton University. She was super involved in her chapter, and she still regularly mentions the sorority on her social media platforms.
Luke Bryan – Sigma Chi
Luke Bryan was most likely always a ladies’ man, but before he used his sweet vocal cords to whoo, he used was shooting game as a fraternity brother of Sigma Chi at Georgia Southern University.
Angela Kinsley – Chi Omega
Most people know Angela Kinsley as Angela from The Office, so it probably comes as a shock that she was a sorority girl back when she was in school. Angela was a sister of Chi Omega at Baylor University, where she was (we imagine) the exact opposite of her character at Dunder Mifflin.
Elizabeth Banks – Tri Delta
That’s right! Elizabeth Banks was in Delta Delta Delta (Tri Delta) while she was enrolled at the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania. She loved being in a sorority and has spoken about how her experience as a sister living in the Tri Delta sorority house really helped shape her character on Pitch Perfect 2.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg – Alpha Epsilon Phi
The woman, the myth, the legend herself, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is an Alpha Epsilon Phi sister! She pledged while she was studying at Cornell in the 1950s, though she did later express her dislike of the segregation of the Greek organizations at the time (Alpha Epsilon Phi was exclusively Jewish at the time, though no longer).
Michael Jordan – Omega Psi Phi
Aside from being an absolute legend on the basketball court, Michael Jordan is also a brother of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. He pledged while he was a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
